My ge washer whdsr315daww does not agitate. It spins and drains normally. I take the softner dispenser off and there is a cap with a large x on it and I can't get it off. Do I pry it off or does the agitator lift off.

It pops off. Place a strap under it and yank straight up forcefully. Watch out you don't hit yourself in the face with it. Does the motor run in agitate? Take the front panel off. Insert a putty knife or similar into the top groove of the front panel in line with the lid opening on each side to release the clips, tilt the panel outward and lift off from the cabinet. Does the motor pulley, belt and large drive pulley rotate during agitate mode?

Yes there is a noise in agitatation. The agitator is really loose and I have never noticed it before.
