I opened up my dryer after it stopped working and found a broken belt. I'm confused because I thought the motor would still run even though the belt is broken. Is this right? Is there some kind of sensor that stops the motor when the belt is broken?

When I hit the start button I heard a click near the motor. When I hit the stop button I hear another click. The motor doesn't spin and I don't hear any other sounds.

There is a switch that is activated by the belt tensioner. With no belt installed, the motor will not run.
