Washer stopped working mid cycle ad stopped dryer

so my washer just stopped full of water.. the lid switch is not the problem.. was a problem but that was fixed... now it spins slowly for a second and smells like burnt hair then shuts itsself off... it wont turn on for a little bit then it does.. this is the first load I have done today andits not a big load....please help me this is my MIL's washing machine

May be something jamming the pump. Drain the water manually. Remove the front cover and pull the pump off the motor and push aside with hoses still attached. See if it will spin. If it spins ok without the pump, you need to remove the pump hoses and check for obstruction in the pump and hoses.
