Whirlpool Washer will not drain unless open and close lid

My whirlpool washer will fill and agitate just fine. When it comes time to drain, the drain cycle does not kick in. If I open and close the lid at the time when the drain cycle should kick in, then it will drain. This happens for the initial drain cycle and the drain cycle after rinse. Any idea what this could be? My problems started after I washed a fairly heavy rug one night (that I should not have in hind sight) and woke up the next morning with washer full of water and the timer was on off.

After agitation stops, if the motor doesn't start again for drain and the timer doesn't advance, it sounds like the lid switch is faulty.

Thanks Eric. The agitation never stops until the dial gets to the off position. Because the drain doesn't kick in, the agitation just keeps on going until off position. The timer dial does advance and I can see when it advances to the point where the drain should happen but it doesn't until I open and close the lid.

That's a new one on me. The only thing I can think of is the timer. Opening/closing the lid cycles power to the timer but that doesn't explain why it's doing what it's doing. If you get the timer from here and it doesn't work, you can return it. Eric
