On August 2, 2021, I purchased a Whirlpool double wall oven from Best Buy for $2,209.97 (including taxes, installation fees and oven removal fees.) The oven was installed in our home on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
Since the oven was installed, we have been attempting to BURN OFF the “new oven smell” that can accompany some new ovens. From the first day the oven was installed, I was shocked by the severity of the vile, burning, chemical-laden smell and visible smoke that permeated most of our home when the oven was turned on. We have attempted to be patient in BURNING OFF this vile smell --- it has now been 12 consecutive days --- but the overwhelming smell is not going away.
From the first hour the oven was installed (when I was told I should turn the oven to 400 degrees for two hours or so) until the present, I have been attempting to burn off the smell. We have NOT cooked anything in the oven since it was installed. Nothing. I have turned the oven on for differing periods of time with nothing in the oven. I wiped down the inside of the oven with pure water, and that has not worked. I have now had no less than ten (10) controlled oven burns, ranging at temperatures from 400 to 500 for 2-4 hours per time, and still the smell invades virtually our home. In each instance, I have taken my family out of our home until the noxious odors dissipate. Surprisingly, the dissipation of the foul smell can take 20 minutes or more even with large fans running on “high” and virtually all the windows in the kitchen and main floor open!
This is completely unacceptable. The oven I purchased is not fit for the purpose for which it was purchased. Moreover, it’s a health hazard. I have now attempted no less than 15 hours to burn the smell off the new oven, and it continues. Getting relief from Best Buy's customer service has been very poor. I intend on returning this oven and getting a full credit for the $2,209.97 I paid for it. It's absurd that a homeowner needs to deal with this.
