Help!! all of a sudden the water dispenser and the ice maker quit working on my GE side by side that is approx 10 yrs old. More symptoms are that the ice cream was soft and there was a slight build up of ice on the back wall of the freezer. I can feel there is water in the ice cube trays it is cold but not frozen the thermometer in the freezer is reading 10 degrees. Any ideas???
Thanks!!!:)

Hello,

Remove the rear panel inside the freezer and check how the evaporator coils are covered with frost. Post the results.

Hi.

Check if the fan inside the freezer works.
if 's OK and you see that the rear panel inside the freezer is frosted, then most likely there is a defrost system problem.
To diagnose it you need a multimeter and basic knowledge how to use it.
Pull out the fridge, unplug it, locate the metal cover at the right lower portion, remove the screws and open the control board Part number: WR55X10942
Part number: WR55X10942

On the left locate 3 wire plug J8,J9,J11 and plug J7 next to it.
Remove the J9 plug and check resistance between J9 wire in the disconnect and J7 pin 9 (top).
If you read 22+ohm - replace the control board.
If there is no continuity - open the rear cover inside the freezer and check continuity of the defrost heater

Part number: WR51X10101
Part number: WR51X10101

and defrost thermostat Part number: WR50X10068
Part number: WR50X10068

The thermostat must be ice cold when checked.

Both should have continuity.

If you are replacing the control board, replace also the defrost sensor located on the top of the evaporator

Part number: WR55X10025
Part number: WR55X10025
