My whirlpool washer is making a grinding type noise when it agitates. Everything else works with the washer. I'm wondering what this might be and if it is worth it to repair it.

Hi.

Check if the lower agitator splines are not stripped. Does the agitator moves back and forth in the wash?
Take the agitator off and run the washer, does it still make noise? If it does - replace the transmission.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and 08-Tub parts for Maytag HAV2558AWW - AppliancePartsPros.com

Simon.
