washer gets to spin and drain cycle and stops . sometimes with water sometimes doesn't drain good. Wife puts it in different cycle mode and it will work. timer?

If it will work correctly in a different cycle then this implies there is no mechanical problem and that you are correct in that the timer is the issue.

Try changing it out, if you buy from this site and the timer does not fix the problem you can return it.
