Have a FRS24ZSG Side by Side Frigidaire fridge/freezer. Freezer is cold, fridge is warm - the dampener between fridge/freezer is in wide open position. Fan in freezer is working.
Coils at back of freezer have slight layer of frost on them - appeared to defrost a little the other day with coils glowing hot ... though not seeing a lot of this activity going on for that . Any idea why my fridge is warm ? ?
Any help sincerely aprpeciated.
Brian

Everything you state seems to indicate that all is working OK so the below are sort of a shot in the dark. Is cold air coming into the fresh food section? Is the vent from the freezer to the fresh food clear, not obstructed by food etc.? Have you measured the temperature in the freezer with a thermometer? Is the coating of frost on the evaporator coils fairly even over the coils? If the frost is just over the coils where the freon enters the evaporator then you may have a low freon situation. Here is a good site with repair info which hopefully will help you figure out what is going on. http://www.applianceaid.com/frig.html |

Thanks very much for your reply .... replies inset ... Everything you state seems to indicate that all is working OK so the below are sort of a shot in the dark. > ok . Is cold air coming into the fresh food section? > I can feel cold air rising from the back of the freezer and there only appears to be the wire which powers the water dispenser warmer going into the fridge side of the appliance. When I took out the electronic damper - they was no electrical wire connecting it - but as I examined in, the plastic vent was pushed into the open position allowing the flow of air from freezer to fridge. Once I put everything back together though - I couldn't feel much air flowing despite the setting on the fridge side being set to max. cold Is the vent from the freezer to the fresh food clear, not obstructed by food etc.? > No - the vent is behind a piece of flat sheet metal which prevents food from being pushed right up to the back. Have you measured the temperature in the freezer with a thermometer? Is the coating of frost on the evaporator coils fairly even over the coils? > When I looked at them yesterday, they were all coated in about 1/4" of frost.
If the frost is just over the coils where the freon enters the evaporator then you may have a low freon situation. > that is what I think - the appliance is 10 years old - is a freon service usually recommended at this point ? Then plug the unit in and give it a try. If you now have cold air being blown into the fresh food section. I would say the damper is at fault and needs replacing.

No, it sounds like your freon is OK. The coils are evenly coated with frost so there is enough freon in the unit to cool down the entire evaporator coil. |

Thank you very much for those suggestions ....
Well this evening I took a look at the panel at the back of the freezer off and let the whole thing defrost completely. After that I reset the temp on the freezer to be less cold - set dial 1/4 way to max cold, set the refrigerator dial to be max cold - got up this mornin and the fridge is certainly colder than what it was. Seems like setting max cold in the freezer robs the refrigerator of cold air.... !!!
Thanks for letting me know about the freon - seems like modern fridges - unless there is a leak - freon is self contained and that shouldn't be an issue ...
So now it's been 10 hours since I let the thing defrost ... the fan is coming on periodically in the freezer - so I` will cross my fingers that the fridge continues to cool at present settings ...
Thanks again for your assist here .... I don't want to buy a new fridge/freezer just yet !!!
