Washer seems to get off balance with just about every load. Tub seems to bang all the way from side to side. Should there be some sort of limiting device (spring or bumper). Can't tell by looking at schematics on GE website. Thanks.

Pull the washer off, remove the back cover and check the suspension. Here are the break down diagrams for the GE washer Model WWA8350GALGene.

Not sure exactly what I am looking for. I assumed there would be some sort of springs or the like that keeps it steady. But I can't seem to identify them in the drawings. Or should I be looking for something else?

You have a very old washer, more than 10 years old. Remove the back panel and check the friction pads on the bottom, probably some fell out, there should be eight friction pads in four leaf springs. It also helps to sand the frame members that slide in these.
