This is the second time that this freezer has had a sheet of ice form in the bottom of it, and actually start leaking out onto the kitchen floor. The first time I just cleaned the ice out and waited to see what happened next, but this time after doing some more research, I found this thread, which seems to describe the same problem.

Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to get both the drawers out in order to get at the back of the freezer properly. The main freezer door front is simple, and the bottom basket lifts right out, but the top drawer seems trickier. There is a plastic tab at the front of the drawer that prevents it from coming all the way off, and a single screw on each side. I tried removing these, which does loosen the top of the slide, but it appears to be a solid piece all the way to the back, and I can't see a way to lift the entire thing out. With it in place, there doesn't seem to be a way to access the back panel to get at the plug-is there? Does the complete drawer assembly have to come out somehow?

Anyway, if others have had the same problem, I'd love to hear how you've managed to fix it. For now I'll monitor what's happening with it and see if it starts accumulating water again.

Thanks!

I've had the same problem and just fixed my fridge. First step in getting the racks and door off is to loosen the 4 screws holding the door on. Lift door up and it will separate from the rack. Next step is to pull out top rack, then remove the 2 screws on each side of the top rack slide. With screws removed, you then push the top of the slide up and the top rack slides out. Next, pull out bottom drawer of freezer. With it extended you will see a plastic tab on each side of the slide. Push each in and the whole bottom rack will slide out.

I then removed the 2 plastic sliders (3 screws each) and the back panel to get at the blocked drain hole. If I do this again I will try to defrost the freezer without reomving panel and sticking a long piece of 14 guage copper wire into the hole to remove any blockages in the drain hole. You will see the hole at the bottom center of the back panel. Worth a try.

These bottom freezer units are infamous for this. what's happening is typically you drop something down the defrost tube maybe a frozen pea or even a single fly will get trapped in there and cause this issue. Some units have a grommet with a slit in it under the unit preventing warm air from going up into the unit but allowing defrost water to drain out this is a engineering mistake on the newer fridges. Clean the drip tray underneath, defrost the unit and take something soft like a long zip tie and a shop vac and go up and down that defrost drain if you can and dislodge whatever may be stuck inside the drain tube. check the drip tray or shopvac after your done and see if you found the culprit. If there was no debris they do sell an aftermarket part called a defrost drain tube heater which is a probe that attaches to the defrost heater and you put it down into the defrost drain tube which doesn't allow the tube to freeze up and create the frozen lake you loathe by now at the bottom of your freezer.

HumboldtRepairMan -I am hoping you can give me a part number for the defrost drain tube heater probe. I have looked and there are many different options. Thanks.

I had this same problem, I defrosted the fridge and checked the drain, it drains properly now so no more sheets of ice, but every 3-4 weeks the back of the freezer freezes up and blocks the airflow to the fridge, which creates a warm fridge. Something other than a clogged drain is the issue here any thoughts?
