If the condenser fan down by the compressor is running, but the compressor is not running the start relay on the side of the compressor maybe bad.

apparently computer got zapped when lightbulb went out. Seven year old whirlpool, is it worth the $500+ to repair or better to buy new?

The main control board is less then $200 if that's what your talking about.
It does not take any special skills or tools to install it.
