My front end load washing machine's fabric softener dispenser is not working. I have removed and cleaned the tray per manual instructions, but the softener does not dispense. I have not seen any error codes. I do not know exactly how the softener is dispensed therefore I am at a lost as to how I correct the problem. Any help will be appreciated.

I would first check the water inlet screens to make sure they are clean.
Next I would check the dispenser diverter to make sure it's working.

Being a novice at washer repair, can you expand on the function of the diverter and what exactly I would see if the diverter is not working. Does it operate with a timed solenoid and what is it diverting? Thank you for responding.
