Hello all. A friend of mine has an Amana ACS3350AS gas range. They are having issues with the control panel shutting off when operating the oven (as similarly documented by several people on the forums). The way they get the oven to stay on during operation is to take an ice pack (one that you would use on a sprained ankle), wrap it in foil, and place it over the control panel. This leads me to believe that the panel is OK, but excess heat is causing it to shut off. So the other day while they were cooking, I noticed that the oven door does not completely close tightly all the way into the cavity ... the hinges seem weak. With the door "closed," there is a lot of hot air escaping out the top of the cavity, but when I push and hold the door closed, there is no heat escaping anymore. Would this excess heat be tripping a limit switch in the way of this heat & shutting off the control panel? I had been doing a bit of reading in this thread ( http://forum.appliancepartspros...-shuts-off-when-hot.html ) about limit switches, cooling, etc, but I'm wondering given the behavior I've seen so far with the oven door, if I'm better off replacing the hinges first before going to the switches/fan to fix the control panel issue (the hinges are probably easier to replace)? Your thoughts? Thanks in advance! -MP

Update ... I replaced both hinges and they work much better and it creates a better seal with the oven cavity. We were able to preheat the oven & bake a batch of brownies without the oven shutting off. Definite progress!
However, I noticed that the cooktop and the front panel (with the burner knobs) still gets too warm to the touch while the oven is on. Reading some of the posts on here, could it be the cooling fan or its limit switch that's failed? Unfortunately it seems the cooling fan is not available, and there are two limit switches available for this oven. Which is the correct one for the cooling fan? (I assume the one that does the total shutoff of the oven is working fine since the oven didn't shut off while baking yesterday)
Is going after the cooling fan system the next logical step, or am I missing something else? A leak of hot air/seal/gasket/etc/etc?
Thanks in advance!

Hi MP, There are two control limit thermostats shown on the diagram - #17 & #20. Unfortunately Mayatd did not specified which one is for the oven and which one is for the cooling fan. The only way how to determine it is the color of the wires connected to the thermostats. Per the wiring diagram there should be the black & the yellow wires connected to the fan limit and the black & the black/white wires connected to the oven limit. Both limits have to be checked for continuity first. Gene.

I assume the fan limit is open until it gets hot enough and then it closes, and the oven limit is closed until it gets too hot when it then opens to shut it off, correct? How would I test these? Do I need to remove the top of the oven and then start the oven to see if it gets hot enough for the fan limit to kick in? If you could detail the troubleshooting steps for this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance. -MP

Per the tech sheet the oven limit is closed but should be open at 240°F while the fan limit is open and should close at 155°F.

Hi. Exact same problem here. Our door hinges were replaced under warranty right after taking delivery, about ten years ago. Should I do it again? Any other updates to this issue?

Exact same problem in most cases means exact same solution. Doesn't it?
You may want to replace the door hinges and perform the same troubleshooting as described earlier.
Gene.
