Our Kenmore dryer began making a high pitch squeeling sound last week. Sometimes when you would first start it up, sometimes in the middle of a cycle. It would go away on it's own after a few minutes. Then it began to get louder and would eventually shut itself off.
Now when I press the 'on' switch to start the dryer it will make a humming noise like the motor is trying to turn but can't. We opened the lid to the dryer and tried to help turn the drum while pressing the on switch. While pressing the switch you can feel a 'click' like it triggered some kind of safety switch and then you will smell a faint eletrical smell. When you try to press the on switch again it will not do anything, not even the humming noise. Like it has no power to it. If you leave it set for about 10 mins and try the on switch again it will make the humming sound like it's trying to turn the drum again.
I'm thinking it's time to replace the motor:( Any advice?

Here are your parts Replacement parts for Kenmore 11060602990 | AppliancePartsPros.comSears parts should have the parts breakdowns that may also help. Yes it could be the motor. Sounds like it is not starting for some reason (the humming). It then overheats and it's internal thermal protect opens (the silence). The motor then has to cool down so the thermal protect closes again and then you get the humming again. Try turning the drum by hand. It should turn fairly easily. You are checking to see if something is putting too much load on the motor so it cannot start. If it is OK then I would pen the unit up and check other parts. Like the rear rollers, belt, front glides, idler wheel etc. You may as well give it an overhaul while you are at it. Get the blower wheel off it before ordering anything. Sometimes the only way to get it off is to destroy it. It is also a good time to check/clean your vent system. |
