Long story short with 1 question.- GE refrigerator evap fan was replaced by appliance repairman early in 2011 (under Home Warranty). The replacement motor did not have the temperature sensor but the parts distributor said that the motor was the only available replacement for this model refrigerator. I was suspicous of how it would work, but eventually the evidence came in- defrost doesn't work properly. The freezer section would defrost and refreeze water everywhere in the freezer. A layer of ice and drops would freeze. I found the correct motor here and purchased earlier this year. I finally replaced the motor over the past weekend and all is good so far!
Question I have is where the temperature sensor should have been placed in relationship to the evap coils. I placed in down between the coils in the area betwen the inner coil and the outer coil, if that makes sense. There was no apparent mounting location that I could find on the coil. I didn't see where the original was when it was replaced last year. I'm hoping that the placement is ok.

That is your evaporator thermistor, must be attached to the upper left evaporator tubing, otherwise you will get incomplete defrost. It slips in a retaining clip. If clip missing, you will need to attach it with a piece of wire.

In relation to part #240 the defrost limiter thermostat on the exploded drawing, would this be mounted against the same evap tubing to the left of that thermostat? Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, to the left of the limiter, wires should be long enough.

One last question, how often does the refrigerator go into the defrost mode? Is it timed based or some other parameter that puts it into defrost mode? If time based, how often? I'm trying to decide when to plan on opening the freezer section back up to make this change. I don't want to wait until it completely freezes up and not be able to move the wire and thermister.

The defrost initiation and duration is due to many factors, so it's hard to predict.
