A friends dishwasher, tells me the door to the soap compartment on the door won't open during the wash cycle. He fills the compartment with soap, closes/latches the door and that's it. It doesn't open to allow the soap out. The latch moves freely. Is there a solenoid or something that should open the door?
Is this a common problem?

Hi. The common problem with this soap dispenser is the wax motor failure. To gain the access to the wax motor remove the outer door. The wax motor Part number: 902899
|

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a way to check the motor (resistance, bypass, etc.) to be certain it's bad before spending $20+ for a replacement?

Hi.
With the front door panel removed start the dishwasher in the light cycle. Install the multimeter probes at the wax motor leads, turn the timer past first prewash and after water fill the timer should send the 120VAC to the wax motor. If you'll get 120VAC - replace the wax motor.
The resistance of the cold wax motor should be 2K ohms.

Simon. I have the same problem with Model MDB6000AWW, soap dish SOMETIMES does not open, but other times does. Should I do the same check? Is the WAX motor likely to be the problem for me also? I removed the white front door panel and cardboard insulation already, but now there's a stainless steel panel that has 3 hex-head screws on each side near the bottom. Is that the "front door panel" you refer to? Do I need to remove all 6 screws?

Hi.
You already removed the front panel. Next free the inner plastic door to get access to the soap dispenser. The same check can determine if this is the wax motor problem.

Simon. Thanks for your prompt response. However, there is no "inner plastic door" on mine (MDB6000AWW), just a stainless steel panel (2 ft wide x 1.5 ft tall) covering the entire door (same size as the removed panel) with two 2 inch diameter holes in the upper-right quarter of the panel. Through the top hole I can see the spring that must be overcome by the wax motor to open the soap door. So, how to get at the motor and its wirings?
