Washer not spinning - how do I open up washer top or side and replace belt?

The washer has stopped spinning. It was making a large clanking noise before it stopped altogether. I have the manuals but they do not show how to open either the top or the side of the washer. Is there a reasonably easy way to open it up and replace the belt (if that is the problem) or do I need to call the repairman?
