Our freezer and fridge have not been cooling very well. I looked at the defrost heater and it appears to be fine, tested with ohm meeter ~22k.
I removed the thermostat defroster and did an ohm test on it at room temp ~80*F and it read CLOSED @ 0.00 ohm. I tested it after submerging it in ice water for 10 minutes and it read CLOSED @ 0.00 ohm. It is currently in a freezer so we can test it again at lower temps.
This is not how the thermostat is supposed to act is it?
** EDIT --- Thermostat is fine. Not sure what the problem is.

Hi.
Remove the rear compressor cover and clean the condenser coil really well. See if that will make a difference. What makes you think that it's the defrost problem?
Post the results.
Simon.

Simon. This is not the 1st times its done this. What it's doing it warming up for a few days. We end up removing all the food and letting it sit for a day and turn it back on. It works fine for months after that. It's done this 3-4 times over the last year or so.

Well... The internet led me down that path. I took off the panel in the freezer and noticed some frost/ice on the condenser. I then inspected the defroster heater and it "looked bad". So, that led me down the path. The path you led me on brought me to this. I since cleaned it with a compressor and vacuum. It was a train wreck in there. I am going to try it again, let it cool and load it back with food tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi.
Check both fan motors, compressor, open the evaporator cover and see how the evaporator coils frosting. It may be the main control board or the sealed system problem.

Simon. Simon, The freezer temp is climbing back to the upper teens again. It seemed to run find for the last 10 days. Woke up this morning at it was at 10*F in the freezer and 44*F in the fridge, the set points are 0/37. Tim

Hi.
Open the evaporator cover and check how the evaporator coils are covered with frost. If it's only partially covered - then there is the sealed system problem. That means $$. You will need a professional service.
Thank you.
Simon.
