The agitator in my Maytag is loose and raises up. It won't agitate. I can easily lift the entire agitator out of the washer. When I lift the agitator out a metal shaft comes along with it. The shaft has an oily substance on the end - transmission fluid? What parts are needed for repair? Also, water could have gotten into the transmission. How do I tell if it has and what do I do about that?

Is there any way to tell if water has gotten in the transmission due to the loose agitator? Do you think anything should be done about that?
Thank you for the previous reply. Hopefully the collar will solve the problem.

The only way I know how to check it is to remove the transmission cover and this is a real pain. Did you see any water/sludge on the shaft. If it was just oil I would leave it. Often when water mixes with oil you end up with a brownish sludge looking material. |

I have this exact same problem on my maytag... but unfortunately, I see brown sludge on the shaft.
Do I have to replace the transmission?
