I recently purchased a replacement belt for my dryer and is narrower than the original one. The new one is 1/4" wide and the old one is 3/8" wide. Also, the new one has 4 ribs and the old one 5 ribs. A "note" when I ordered the belt states that the 1/4" belt replaces the wider one. However, the original motor pulley is sized correctly to accommodate the 3/8" wide belt with 5 ribs. If I install the new belt, a gap will exist between the it and one end of the pulley (i.e. too narrow). When I view the parts for my dryer model, the motor pulley shown shows 4 ribs, which I assume will also match the new and improved 1/4" width belt. So do I install the belt on the old pulley or do I also have to order the new pulley?

I think the new belt will be fine, as long as it is the right length.

Sorry for the late response, but I have been gone on a trip. I compared both the new and original belts; both are the same lengths.

I realize the ribs should keep the belt from sliding on the motor pulley, but will the gap still be okay or would it be better to order the narrower width pulley. In other words, because the belt is not snug within the motor pulley walls (as was the old belt) will this cause it to wear out sooner or possibly damage it?

You don't sound confident that it will be okay to not replace the old pulley.

I really think you will be fine, and I do not know if the replacement pulley hs been adjusted for the change in belt width.
