Hi, We have a 2 1/2 year old GE JB840TP1WW Glass cook top electric range.
My wife and I do all the cooking and we keep it in excellent condition.
I am the one responsible for cleaning the glass top and other than a 1 mm scratch on the top it is in great condition....until now. While cleaning this morning, I noticed a very faint hairline scratch/crack running from the front center of the unit all the way to the back about 4 inches to the right of center. Neither my wife or I can remember dropping or using anything heavy on the top. We have stainless cookware and not cast iron.
I called Home Depot Warranty and after talking to a supervisor I was able to make an appointment to have someone come out and look at it.
I am posting here and checking prices on a new top to keep all my bases covered. It was mainly after seeing the price of the new top I wanted to post.
First, can these tops crack under stress due to defects? In other words can they just crack on their own?
If it does need to be replaced, is this something best left to a pro?
I have changed the coils on our fridge, handle on the dishwasher and other minor appliance repairs. I was just wondering if this one, due to the cost of the top, is best left alone.
Finally, can we still use it.
Any advice or help is appreciated.
Thank you!
Mike

We had a GE Profile that cracked in the corner after 6 years. We replaced it with a new unit. This unit is only about 18 months old (I think). I got up this morning and noticed a horizontal crack running across the middle from one side to the other. I use stainless Steel pots, and everyone says I bang the pots around. But I didn't notice any crack when cleaning the glass the night before. I'm going to check the warranty tomorrow.
