This is more a curiosity question than a request for help. Recently our electric dryer stopped heating. My wife discovered this at the end of an evening when the dryer was full. Along with not heating, the timer was not moving. Still don't understand why not. Anyhow, lacking any better option, she left it running all night with just cool air blowing. In the morning the clothes were nicely dry.

With the help of your site I was able to diagnose as broken heater coil and coil is on order but I am left curious.

Did the dryer use any less energy drying the clothes overnight than it would have if the coil was working properly?

On most units when the timer is in an auto mode it's motor gets power through the heating coil when the heater is shut off by the thermostat. So if the coil is open (blown) the timer will not advance.

I cannot say if you saved any energy by running without the heater, I would have to sit down with a calculator and figure out kilowatt hours. My gut says yes but it will not be a huge savings.
Also running like this puts a lot more wear and tear on all the moving parts and drum supports/seals in the unit.
So what you gain in electrical savings would be offset by maintenance costs.

Ah. That makes sense. Both of your answers, that is. Thanks.
