Over the past few weeks our freezer has begun to shut off (freezer as well) and allow the food to thaw out. I just replaced both the defrost timer and defrost thermostat for the freezer's defrost cycle. I did that Sunday afternoon and today (Tuesday) the freezer was thawing out, ice melting, etc.

All I need to do to get it to turn back on is to turn the fridge thermostat to off then back to "coldest" and it takes back off and runs.

Is the thermostat bad? What controls the temperature in the fridge? And why does my freezer quit running contingent on the fridge running? Are they somehow linked?

Thank you!

Hi.

Based on the symptoms you are describing I recommend you to replace the thermostat(cold control).

The thermostat Part number: 2198202

Replaced the cold control this evening. Easy job, only took 15 minutes maybe. Right under the old unit there was quite a bit of black powder so I'm assuming the contacts were burnt up which is why it wouldn't function correctly. It's running right now, it will take a few days to know positively if it was the problem. Stinks I swapped out two good parts in the defrost themostat and defrost timer but that's life! :)

Thank you for the help!

Jacob

Well... I'd say that was the smoking gun. About a hour after repair there was frost forming on the fridge vent. It has never done this. I turned it down towards the middle and that seems about right.
