My clothes washer has recently started thumping during the spin cycle. I removed the back panel and find that the inner tub shaft slides forward and backward on the rear exterior tub bearing. That is, the bearing doesn't move, just the inner tub shaft. Is this normal, or is this the source of my problem? What is the fix: a new bearing or inner tub or both? tia j

I don't think that is your problem.
Look for a broken shock assembly, or a broken support spring.

Thanks...I did notice some oil on one of the lower shocks. I checked the springs also and they looked and felt ok. If I switch out the lower shock, should I go ahead and do both? jb

I hate to suggest spending money when we are not sure, but sometimes on shocks they are defective and you cannot determine the how or why of it.
If your shocks and springs are good the machine should not bounce around. After you do this operate it with the back off and see if you can determine if anything else is out of whack.

Replaced the shocks and found that the bushings on two of the mounting points (one on each shock) were broken and the rubber bushings worn.
However, the thumping/now a bit more rubbing sound, still persists.
Am I wrong in assuming that the tub assembly has to come out and be taken apart, or is there some other possible solution? thanks again j

I would remove the front bottom panel and remove the tub drain hose and look and feal inside the tub for something stuck in there. If the hose had a spring clamp, they are very hard to get back on. I would use a ss hose clamp instead.
If you find nothing, you might have a busted spider support arm inside the tub.

Well, there is nothing inside that can be seen or felt. I guess it's "remove the tub time". Any words of precaution or advice? It doesn't seem too difficult, but I'm a bit hesitant about removing the front rubber seal. tia j
Post tub removal. It is the bearing set in the rear tub section. Can they and the water seal be replaced, or does the entire rear section need to be replaced? thanks again j :-(
