I used the existing posts to help me resolve my problem. My evaporator was completely blocked with ice/frost. The evaporator fan could not move air across the coils. I will watch my temperature over the next several months and check the defroster if the problem returns.
Thanks,
Bill

Keep an eye on it! Chances are that if you defrosted the evaporator, you will have a couple of weeks before all that ice reappears. The ice forming on your evaporator is an indication that you have an automatic defrost problem.

Follow up. The problem came back a few weeks later (as you predicted). I replaced the defrost heater and thermistor (the book said 'replace one, replace the other'). Been fine for 2 years now.
Thanks,
