Hello,

I am currently restoring a 1959 coke machine (Caviler CS-96-B) , the refrigeration compressor assembly is in decent shape and uses R-12. I did have to replace the condenser fan but other than that it appears to be operational. Ok, my issue is it does not feel very cool and the bottom of the evaporator coils and the evaporator inlet are both frosting over so I figured it will probably require a charge. So I ran some tests with my composite gage to see where the system is currently at. There is a piercing valve on the low end just before going back into the compressor. I attached the gage and got 37 psi static. Then I plugged in the system and watched as the compressor kicked on and got a -14 Vacuum. I have no way of checking the high side of the system. Is there any other test I can run to determine if I need to recharge the system? So where would I go from here.

Thank you for any assistance

It is definitely low on Freon and has to be charged. A piercing valve can be a spot where it's leaking from.
