Ice maker stopped making ice. There was no water flowing through the inlet but we were getting water through the water dispenser. The repair person replaced the water valve? part # 2188746 but told us that there was a chance that the ice maker was also bad and that these two parts commonly go bad together. It's been two days and still no ice so he is coming back to replace the ice maker. My question is; Is it common that both parts go bad together?

No it is not common. There is a tub that goes through the back of the freezer wall into the ice maker. Sometimes this tube will freeze shut and needs to be thawed out. The water fill tube will freeze shut from low water pressure. Ether from a bad water valve or low pressure to the refrigerator itself. Pull the refrigerator out and remove the tube from the back wall to check it.

we cleaned the valve and now with the refrigerator on and off the water pressure is excellent we feel valve working but there is not way we can stop the water flow. Is the valve (part#2188746) broken. Sorry if any delay with my response but i am hispanic and takes time for me to answer

Most likely the water valve is stuck open. It has to be replaced. The Whirlpool part number 2188746 is APP item number AP3160649 Gene.
