We had a similiar problem and paid a repairman $109.18 to come out and remove the screens at the bottom of the dishwasher to access the grinder. He simply removed the small plastic cover and discovered the small china chip that was preventing the blade from revolving and the pump from running. Our dishwasher also hummed apparently from the inability of the motor to rotate. I had not removed the cover as I was in fear of voiding the existing warranty on the unit. I wish I had had a schematic of the unit to show me the possible solution that I could easily have remedied and saved $109.18!!!!! Note a special screwdriver is needed to remove the cover.

Hi, Just took grey plastic cover off in drainage compartment, spun the white motor a few times and now working! Problem was a kink in the drain pipe which caused a backlog of debris. Saved me £110.00 repair bill. Cheers!:)
