The dishwasher works if I manually turn the knob through all the cycle, but the timer won't cycle by itself. The dishwasher is only 5 years old, and hasn't been used much. Is there anything besides the timer that could be the problem?

If you have power to the time motor, but it does not advance then the timer is at fault and needs to be replaced.
