After I turn on the small right back burner, in about 30-60 seconds, an error message starts flashing on the control pad, F143. I have not had any luck trying to find out what this error message means. So far it only happens when I have tried to use this right back burner. Can you help identify the problem, and what part needs to be replaced, if any? We did turn off the power to cooktop and try to reset it, but that did not work. Thank you.

Thank you. I will try to find the complete Model #. Do I have to pick up the unit from the countertop to find the Model #?

If this is just a stove top unit, then the model number is probably on the bottom panel.

Yes, it is just a dark glass cooktop unit only. I will have to find it when I get home from work and get back with you. All I have is the owner's manual in my office and it says the model number is JP939, so I will look for more numbers after that on the bottom of the cooktop itself. Thanks.

I finally have the whole model # to the GE cooktop. It is:

JP939BOH1BB

Just in case, the serial #TF7344900

The error message is F143. Also, the red light stays on now saying the cooktop is still hot.

Thank you for your help.

The "F143" error code means "Open temperature sensor".

The cause of the problem could be the temperature sensor (the temperature sensor is a part of the heating element and can not be replaced separate) or the main control board.

The replacement of any of these parts must be followed by a special calibration process which is very complicated and could be done by an authorized GE technician only.

As an alternative to replacing the motherboard or sensor, can the sensor just be disconnected? It's not needed as far as we are concerned, and disconnecting is usually less expensive than replacing...!

This error code means that the control senses the sensor is "open". "Open" means - no continuity or in other words the resistance reading is ∞.

Disconnected sensor means exactly the same situation and will end up with the same error code.
