My Refrigerator has been making loud noises like the compressor is working harder than normal. I have also been hearing a clicking noise like a relay opening/closing.
I noticed the temp would fluctuate from -1 to 14 deg. I thought that the door was left open but that was not the case.
The freezer is now the same temp as the refrigerator.
I think its either stuck on defrost or the thermostat is busted.
How can I check the thermostat and/or the sensors? Any other help would be great.

Hi Justin,

Remove the cover on the back of the refrigerator and check if the compressor works. Does it makes any noise?

Gene.

I opened up the back of the freezer (inside the freezer compartment) and noticed the condesor coils were frozen. but not all of them. only the bottom run from the input.
fan works in the freezer, fan works on the coils with the compressor. compressor is hot. I think it may be the thermostat attached to the refrigerant line coming from the compressor. any way of checking that? simple continuity or is it a specific Ohm range?
PN is on this site.

also: compressor did sound like it was making a surging noise. believe this may be normal. this unit is only 3 years old.

Sounds like a partial restriction in the sealed dystem. Try unplugging it for 24 to 48 hours, then plugging it back in. Look for a uniform frost pattern on your evaporator coil within a few minutes of plugging it in. If you get the same frost pattern you had before, you need to call in a professional.

Just to add my 2 cents...

In case if there is a problem with the sealed system - check the manufacturer warranty. It could be up to five years on the sealed system.

I defrosted the unit as I described before. the unit got back to -1 deg. this AM I looked at it and it was warmer than the refrigerator at 52deg while the fridge is warm at47deg. does this lean towards the thermostat?

and what would be blocking the evaporator?

Some mfgrs still warrant the sealed system for up to 12 years.
