My dishwasher was broken with a failed heating element. I replaced the heating element but now the dishes are all coming out with a grey film. We reduced the amount of dish soap and it was great for 2 weeks. Now it is really bad. There is also a loud grinding noise. Broken pump? Motor? what to look for?

Remove the bottom panel and check if that noise is coming from the main motor. Post the results.

Sorry for the delay but I have been spending quality time with the dishwasher. Here is what I am observing. Noise is coming from the bottom of the dishwasher when it is close to draining out or has completely drained the tub but continues to run for a short period: I hear the water flowing in the sink drain then a loud rattling noise. When washing the DW makes a swish followed by a groan then swish and groan. I dismantled the spray arms and the bottom drain sump area. I found a couple peas and a few slices of potato. I cleaned all these out and verified the spray arms did not have any obstructions. I ran the DW without anything in it on the rinse cycle about 5 times and the gray water turned less gray. This improved the machine but it still has to run on Pots & Pan + hi-temp + Sani-Rinse to clean dishes that are almost clean when I place them in the DW.

Does this noise coming at the same time when the dishwasher should get water?
The best way to pinpoint that noise is to remove the bottom panel and watch it during the cycle. Why you did not do it yet?

Yes, I did. I took the front panel off (it is still off). Laid on the floor with a flash light and kept my hand on various parts. Seems the noise is close to the front of the DW. When it fills it sounds like a small weed trimmer gas engine at idle but very quiet. When it drains is sounds solid and full of water then toward the end it gets loud and rattles. I tried to open up the baffle under the main spray arm in front where I found the potatoes but could not.

Just checked again. The loud sound is from the motor just behind the outlet pipe and half of the dishes are clean.

Check the chopper as described in the attached file. Make sure it is connected properly with the pump impeller. - The chopper Part number: AP3039186
