My washer sometimes shows a F6 error reading, and will not continue with the cycle. If I leave it 24 hour, it will usually work fine andrun for several more cycles.I've had a repair man look at it, but it won't error when he is watching. It is frustrating, and neither he or I know where to turn. Any ideas?
Thanks Ron

Hi Ron

That error message is associated with the situation where the tachomoter on the motor is not relaying the motor speed to the motor control unit which relays the info to the central control unit.

Given that your problem is not permanent, it may be loose or shorted wiring between the motor tach, motor control board and CCU. Check out all of that wiring.

If that does not fix it, you are looking at replacing the motor and/or the motor control board, both very expensive, so try to make sure the wiring is ok.

Let us know what you find out, and just for curiosity, what the heck did the service tech do? I mean, this is info is not classified, didn't he or she tell you this? Did they charge you?

Good luck.

We checked the error code sheet found in the machine. Stated just what you said. He checked all connection. He moved and wiggle all the wiring harnesses while the machine went through the cycles. It ran three times flawlessly, and then worked about two days. What is odd is that when the F6 error shows up the machine is trying to pump water out, and the tub is turning very slow. Also, about two or three weeks ago, we used about a half a bottle of "non" HE detergent before we realized that we had the regular, not HE detergent. Could that have left some lasting problem in the pump system? Again after the error occurs, if I wait 12-24 hours, the machine will run through the cycle. Also, I tried running loads without detergent, and it was able to go through the cycle ten time flawlessly.
Any comment would be appreciated.
Thanks Ron

Hi Ron

Thanks for the info, I feel better now that we know you got some guidance from the tech visit.

I would take the drain plug off of the pump and clean out the pump and drain area very thoroughly. It may be that some water is remaining in the system, slowing down the spin and causing the mcu to report the error as a bad tach reading. I really do not understand why running the machine without detergent would avoid the problem. When you tried this did you have a full load of clothes or run it empty? Does it work ok if you put the detergent in with the wash rather than using the detergent drawer? If you ran it empty of clothes then that points to a motor problem, the motor being unable to handle the load of wet clothes in the spin cycle.

I doubt if using the non HE detergent for as short a time as you did would cause the problem, although using too much non HE detergent in these machines does cause major problems.

Anyway, see if you can really scrub this thing clean in the drain system so that all of the water leaves. If this does not fix the problem I think the likely culprit is the motor failing, and being unable to turn the machine fast enough resulting in your error code. The fact that it takes 12 to 24 hours and then works again suggest that the motor is overheating and has to cool down and "reset" before the machine will work again. In short, if you cannot fix this with the drain cleaning a new motor is the likely (but not certain) solution.

Good luck and keep us posted as it will be really instructive what you find out here.

I ran test loads as follows: heavy load of towels. First just towels, next towels with detergent in drawer (no bleach), next towels with just bleach, next towel with bleach and detergent in drawer, finally an extra spin to get towels easier to dry. This was in succession, so I don't suspect motor overheating, (also motor neither smelled hot or was unusually hot to touch.)
The machine ran another 5-6 loads before going in the the error mode. I'll clean out the pump and drain system and see what's up with that. This is a most unusual problem. I'm a pretty good "parts changer", but this electronic stuff is had to test. Any ideas you might have I'd appreciate. Sorry to be a bother.

Hi Again Ron

Actually, you are not a bother, in fact to be honest about it we sorta live for situations like this, an interesting problem that does not have a ready solution.

When I talked about the motor failing I don't mean in the traditional sense where it overheats, but in a situation where for some reason the wiring connections are failing (probably from heat generated by the motor). This is one of the few things I can think of that would cause your symptoms, mainly the tachometer wiring heating up, giving a false speed signal which shuts down your machine.

Unfortunately the only way to ever diagnose this is to actually replace the motor, which is expensive and so that is why we are trying to get you to try the other stuff before you have to go that route. My thinking on the drain is that if water is left in the machine it may slow it down enough to cause the problem. Is this grasping at straws, probably.

Anyway, keep at it and keep letting us know what's you find out. As you will notice from the number of views, there are a fair number of folks looking at this.

I know the original post is a couple years old, but I came across this while trying to diagnose my washing machine. Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I just pulled off my drain hose and it was kinda clogged with gunk, I cleaned that out really good. I was sure it was going to be fixed after that, but it's still beeping and saying F6 error. Ugh.... please tell me it wasn't anything major. :(
