Well, my 'missing' lid switch turned out to be my problem. When I got the sheet metal off there it was, hanging down in back of the tub. Last person to 'repair' the machine left it there. The screw attachments are broken, so he couldn't reinstall it. His solution was to put a few laps of celophane tape around it, to hold it in the closed position, and leave it hanging.
Of course the tape adhesive eventually failed and the spring-loaded switch opened. I'm amazed this 'repair' lasted as long as it did. I made a little bracket out of sheet aluminum and reinstalled the thing.
Biggest problem I had was reassembling the washer body, but I managed....
Gene, appreciate your help!

Mike,
Whatever you did is good as a temporary solution only. The lid switch is a safety device and it's worth $23.83 to replace it.
Gene.
