Our 12 yr old Amana has quit freezing. From the many posts and answers on this excellent forum I have realized that our fridge has probably reached its demise. The food compartment is still cool enough to work but the freezer is 34 degrees. There is frost on about 5 inches of the evap coil from the right hand end. Are DIY compressor jobs feasable? Could it be something simple? Can a novice recharge one of these? My parents bought a Frigidaire the year I was born-1946-and when I inherited it after many moves it ended up in Montana in an electronics store. It is still running and has never, to my knowlege, been serviced. From that to this--No one can tell me that's "progress"!

That is not a DYI job. A qualified tech would find and repair the leak and recharge system or replace compressor requiring soldiering and recharging.
