My dryer will not turn off. The dial will not advance no matter what position I turn it to - it will not advance to the off/stop position. I have to open the door to stop the dryer and the heat is intensely hot! I was told maybe it was a timer motor issue? Is that true?

The first thing I would do is clean the vent line all the way through the outlet. Disassemble the dryer and clean all air ducts and the blower wheel and its housing. Open the control panel and check the timer motor for continuity. If the motor circuit is open then the timer has to be replaced. Do not replace the timer without testing it. Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for MAYTAG MDG4000BWW | AppliancePartsPros.comGene.
