I am guessing on the age, am housesitting. The washer suddenly stopped working last night. Have checked it through the cycles and find it fills and drains fine, and the lid switch works, but it will not spin or agitate. I have the external vane off (or whatever the plastic part around the center agitator thing is called) and now am thinking about taking the bolt out of the top and looking in there. The motor seems to be working fine and during those parts of the cycle that would normal be spin or agitate, it makes a slightly metallic sound but no movement in that center shaft. Can you tell me what to do please? Thanks so much!

Hi Jill I cannot get your model number to come up, so I am going to assume that what you are house sitting is a basic direct drive Whirlpool washer. In that case a likely culprit is your motor coupler and there is really nothing in the agitator that should cause your problem. To check and replace it, follow this video. YouTube - Direct Drive Washing Machine Repair Video Tutorial *Watch in HIGH Quality!*You do not need to disconnect the pump, just tie it off to the left. Otherwise be prepared for a gush of water. Finally, if this is the problem and you do repair it, make sure you get a really big tip for the house sitting gig. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
