I have a 2001 kenmore elite side by side. The freezer is filling up with ice starting with the back. This is the second time in 3 months. defrosted freezer overnight, pulled all covers. checked drain. Clear. Turned on water and ice maker and checked for leaks none. Unplugged and checked defrost heater, 0 ohm. Unplugged and checked thermostat, 0 ohm. So now I am stuck. Any suggestions?

Your defrost heater should not read 0 ohms.

I set the ohm meter to 0 (not infiniti) while touching the two leads together, then touched the leads of the heater and got the same reading. I thought that meant that the heater is intact?

We had the same problem with ours (2002 year, same model). Called out the Sears repair man, and he told us the problem is with the control panel (or board). He said the freezer is running too cold, so that the drain is freezing up (even though it's not clogged). The cost to replace was over $600. You can order the board directly from Sears ( http://www.sears parts direct.com/kenmore-refrigerator-parts/2216920/0046/106/model-10652703100/0582/0165000. html). I haven't done this, yet, so I'm not sure this is the cause. I'm simply putting out here what the repair man stated.

Check the freezer temperature. It should be between 0 and 5 degrees F. |
