I have an old sub-zero (~25yrs?) model 3211RFD which has been decked out with new stainless steel panels and repainted trays. We actually got it looking nice.. and then the fridge stopped cooling completely. Freezer works fine. Repair man says 'bad compressor', and wants $822 to fix it (located in Dallas). Is this a reasonable price? Where can I get a cheaper compressor? I crazy to have him fix it? Are there better options?

Your system has R12 in it. You need a refrigeration lisence to re-charge. This price quote is rather high, usually $400-600. Fridg. probably not worth it.
