Wondering if this is normal operating behavior.. Every so often I will find the freezer portion of our GE profile side by side at -9 degrees. Seems to happen pretty often. This makes scooping ice cream difficult. Is this a normal function of the defrost cycle? I've never noticed it with any other refrigerator i've owned. Could this be a thermostat issue?

It is called the pre-chill mode. This happens just before every defrost cycle and it is basically to get the temperature down so that it doesn’t rise so high during defrost. During this mode it can get down to –15. This cycle will last at least 2 hours but not more than 8. This cycle will only happen just before a defrost this refrigerator will go through a defrost cycle every 8-48 hours. GE Refrigerator Repair Guide

This might not be normal behavior if at the same time the fridg section gets warmer than normal.
