If it is less than 1 year old it should be under factory warranty. Get Maytag out to fix or replace it.

Thanks. everyone. They are coming out tomorrow. Maytag told me to make sure the repairman calls 800-387-1086 about getting the upgraded parts they came out with in July, which is about 3 months after I bought it. Apparently it is a known flaw.

Purchased Maytag 4000 Series washer May 2010 from Lowes. Started making noise after a month or so and first serviceman (local recommended by Lowes) said it just needed leveling but he didn't do a good job of leveling the unit. Over Christmas 2010, my son-in-law helped me and we got it perfectly level in both directions. Unfortunately, the noise just got worse and finally unbearable. Called Maytag 800# and a second serviceman came and turned the basket a few inches in each direction and said that the bearing was gone. He came back a few weeks later and installed the bearing and a new tub within the 1 year warranty by Maytag. This solved the noise problem for only a few weeks and it gradually got worse with each use until it is again unbearable. Lowes has agreed to replace it with an in-stock Maytag 5000 which I understand is the same as the 4000 but has an additional steam option. However, my wife is so fed up with this washing machine that she is reluctant to try another Maytag 4000 or 5000. Of course, all the repairs mentioned above were done before July 2011. So, I was wondering if you yet know what the upgraded parts Maytag came out with in July 2011 to solve the horrendous noise for the Maytag 4000? Also, I would have to determine if the upgraded parts have already been installed in the in-stock Maytag 5000. Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

We really don't get famliar with models until after a number of years because they are under factory warranty, so I cannot really give you any info on these models.

I am considering taking on the repair of a Maytag 4000 series washer only a few years old that has a failed bearing. The owner says the bearing has failed twice before in the last 2 years. Before I start on this job which may or may not even be realistic due to cost I am asking other experts if there is a different bearing that can be installed in place of the original design or can the washer be modified somewhat to make this bearing last longer. I am a retired engineer and when something like this design fails it appears that a better idea should be possible.
