Washer makes metal on metal grinding noise during spin cycle only. Sounds like someone rolling a metal wheeled cart across a pergo floor. I'm thinking it's a bearing gone bad. Sounds to be up near tub area of what I assume is the transmission. Any ideas, and is it hard to fix?

It is not a difficult repair but it takes a lot of time and some special tools and it mostly takes the Maytag repair manual and the tech bulletin on this part which I can no longer link you to because Maytag won't let us anymore.

Contact Maytag and see if they will get you that info, then see if you want to tackle the job.
