My Kenmore dishwasher recently started being very loud during the wash cycle. I've checked the chopper/masher and there doesn't seem to be any hard debris. I also pulled the chopper and the teeth look fine, so my current thinking is that I need to replace the motor due to bad bearings.

Does this seem reasonable? Does anybody have the tech sheet which describes the replacement process? I've seen some tech sheets for Whirlpool dishwashers, so I would assume that the process is basically identical. This is, however, a tall-tub model, where the door takes up almost the entire front. Is it possible to replace the motor in this model w/o removing the dishwasher?

I had the same problem with my 2 year old Kenmore elite. I bought the motor assemblt for $165 and replaced it myself in less than 1 hour. I took the dishwahser to my garage and laid it on its side to access the motor. You need to disconnect the power plug in from the motor. Then remove an electrical sub panel on the edge that is held on by two small hex screws. This panle blocks access to the one 3/8" bolt holdonh on the motor. You need a 3/8" sockets on a long drive. I used my 1/4" socket set with a 6" drive. The one bolt is removed , the motor assembly twists slightly counter clockwise to disengage the flanges and then the motor pulls out. It takes a litle rocking to do it but it is a friction fit. The new motor and O ring need to be lubed up with vaseline and then they fit in and a slight clock wise twist seats the flanges.

Before you take it insode check the seal by setting it upright and pouring a glass of water in it. If it holds water then the seal is good. You also need to be sure that the impeller is spining freely. If you re assemble it and the motor does not turn freely then the impeller and motor spindle did not seat propoerly. Take it out and try again.

Very easy repair.
