Hello everyone, this is my first post to this site. I want you to know ahead of time that I appreciate any and all help.

I have a Kenmore 106.8770686 that I inherited when I purchased my home. For some time now I have heard a very loud noise at times when what I believe is the compressor is coming on. Yesterday, I noticed initially that there was no ice, then it occured to me that the freezer was not functional. This morning the refridgerator portion has gone out completely. The breaker never tripped and the lights are still functioning. Before breaking it down I priced a new compressor and a new relay. They are approx. $240 and $40 respectively. I have a fairly good mechanical aptitude and have worked with appliances, just not refridgerators. Would someone please point me in the right direction and as a secondary request or question, if it is indeed the compressor is it worth that much to revive the old unit. Thanks again for any help.

You would have to add another chunk of money for labor because that is not a do it yourself job.

It would be practically as good as new since the sealed system is the main part. If it's the type you want to spend your live with it could be worth repairing. You can probably buy a low cost basic model for 500 more than the repair will cost.
What I'm saying is think about all the options.
