while replacing the defrost heater I poked a hole in the silver coil part of the evaporator kit in the freezer compartment. I heard a hissing sound and before I could patch it it sounded like all the air came out. Was this freon? will it still freeze/cool the fridge? Thansk for any help.

Being aluminum, you may need to replace the entire coil. Don't know if it can be effectively patched. Yes, that hissing sound you heard was the refrigerant gas.
