Hello,
I have the following washing machine Maytag mod# mavt236aww. It started making a noise in the motor during the spin cyle before it finally completely stopped workin, now when you turn it on it humms about 5 - 10 seconds before it makes a knocking noise,im assuming that it is kicking the overloads because of overheat due to a locked up motor,i have a little knowledge of electricity and electronics and am guessing here of course,so i pulled the back panel off and looked to see if i could see any obvious problems, i observed nothing unusual other than a burnt electric smell when i again tried to start the washer. I'm really strapped for cash so im thinking that i can fix this washer myself but have never attempted before.Which leads me to my question,in your opinion do you think the motor is my problem and how hard is it to replace,i have mechanical/electrical exp. and troubleshoot pretty good but i value your honest professional opinion. Thank you for any info.
PS. also before the washer gave out completely it would make a squelling noise after it stopped spinning and the clothes seemed like they werent getting as dry as they used to.

Hi,

I would remove the belt and try to run the motor by itself to see what happens.
Also turn the water pump pulley by hand to see if it's free.

You can take the front of this washer off so you can see more then what you can through that little panel in the back.

Here is the service manual for your washer.

I took the belt off and the front panel and the motor just sat there and hummed for about 3-10 seconds before making a knock noise and then going silent, upon an immediate attempt to restart it wouldnt do anything no noise nothing. I tied turning the motor by hand and it turns freely also i tried turing the tub as well and it turns also the pump also turns easily. I then proceeded to remove the motor and it was pretty simple but i cannot figure out how the motor spring is supposed to go back on.
Should i spend the cash for a new motor considering this machine is 6 years old,do you think it would be worth it? Should i be concerned about the other components on this washer failing shortly after i fix the motor issue ? What kind of life expectancy does the other components usually have on this machine? Thanks for your time any info is appreciated.
