I just did this job today on my MAH5500BWW Washer. I used a long narrow screw driver (about 10 inches). I first put the spring at the end near the handle and the small flat end in the opening in the tension wire.
I then raised the screw driver slowly and the spring slide down the screw driver until it matched the opening in the tension wire. I then used a needle nose to twist the spring in place. I took 2 trys, but it worked. And the washer is now washing without leaking. :) YEAH!!

glad to hear you got it! Sorry about all the confusion concerning the clamp...when you described it as a wire, the door boot clamp came to mind.

Magician59 - the door boot clamp is what I am trying to install, but I'm not sure how to attach it to the gasket. Is there a diagram somewhere I can refer to?

Here's a parts breakdown: Replacement parts for MAYTAG MAH5500BWW | AppliancePartsPros.com
The boot (part#18) fits on the tub cover. It is lipped to fit within the channel on the cover, but if you can get help keeping it in place, the job can go a lot smoother. The clamp (part #19) fits within the same channel, just in front of the lip on the boot, and is held in place by the spring (part #20). I use two pair of ViceGrip pliers. I first hook one end of the spring in the loop at one end of the clamp. I then firmly grasp the other end of the clamp, just behind the loop in one ViseGrip. The other ViseGrip clasps the free end of the spring, and I pull them together until I can work the spring into the loop. A healthy measure of patience is really helpful, here. Once the clamp is in place, it is necessary to make sure it is consistently placed inside the lip of the boot. Good luck. Report what works for you. This is a task where as many methods as possible can be an encouragement to others, including the pros.
