When purchased new 2 yrs. ago, told sales person it was for the garage to be used as 2'nd frige for pop, beer, etc. Live in Utah, today is 20 degrees, last winter lost all food in freezer to thawing. Found manual, only to see it states a minimum temperature for operation ( room temp.) of 55 degrees. Freezer is again getting warm. Can this default temp be set lower or disconnected?

Many Frigidaire refers have what's called a cold weather kit that consists of a heater that is placed near the operating thermostat to trick it into working when the temperature drops below 55 degrees. The model number would be needed to locate the correct item.

Brian,
Thanks for the quick reply, model is FRT18KB2DWA. Are you referring to a thermostat on the compressor for room temp. ?

This is a kit that keeps the control thermostat at a warmer state so it will continue to cycle even when the ambient temperature would normally keep it from cycling. It's made by Frigidaire for their units and will prevent food loss in the freezer section during short cold snaps. If the unit is spending days in the cold, or if it is exposed to very cold temps, it needs to be put in a warmer location.

I ordered the "garage kit" for cold weather but can't find out where/how it's to be installed. What are your thoughts?

I have a home brewing buddy who had the same problem and I installed a commercial temp control that used a wide range scale in his garage fridge... Still working great today... Some can be rather spendy but I imagine beLowe's or Home Repot would have a moderately priced one...

The garage kit comes with an installation sheet complete with photos to aid in installation. Once you see it, you will see there is only one way for it to be installed. No problem 10 minutes tops.
