Hi I have a maytag side by side. Yesterday it started making a buzzing for 10-20 seconds every 30-90 minutes. Sounds like an alarm or a relay with a bad connection. Everything else operates as normal. If I am close when it happens it stops temporarily while the door is opened. Resumes when closed. Actuating the door switch (to open position)stops it temporarily. Never heard any similar noise from this unit before. Any idea what would be coming on and off by itself and be affected by the door switch?

thanks

Hello Stijet. sounds like the evaporator fan motor blade hitting some ice build up on the evaporator due to a defrost problem to me. I would like to help you further with this issue but , I have no model number for the unit we are speaking of , please check that and we will try to help you more.Look inside the freezer compartment on the back wall do you see any ice build up ? If so its a sure thing defrost problem. Thank you and good luck !

Hi Jet. There are a few checks to consider. First, open the door that stops the chatter and then close the door switch with your hand to see if you locate the noise in the switch itself. If so it is part # [AP4072810]. Tape the door switch taped closed while inside and trying to identify the issue. Then look down below to verify if you have a 'CZT' vegatable and meat drawers. They have Dampers and fans included in each drawer. Is the chatter comming from them? Are they completely closing and the digitals lighting up on the face controls of each drawer. If so then unfortunately, there are no longer parts available for the drawers. Is the chatter noise comming from the upper rt. rear of the controls on top? If so there is a "Adaptive defrost Control Board" mounted inside the controls. It has small relays there that operate 7 different circuits. It is part [AP4083270]. Then look in the freezer. Is there any frost build up on the back wall as if the evap. fan blades are hitting ice build up on the coils? If so you will need to replace the defrost thermostat/heater assy. part # [AP4072797].ve. Is the ice maker chattering as if there is a stuck cube in the ejector arms. If so then un- jam the cube. Is the chattering coming from the fountain control board area as if the ice chute flap is not closing all the way ? You may need the Chute flap repair kit w/instructions part # [AP4009082]. Check the freezer door switch to see if it is noisey. It is part # [AP4072810]. There is a relay on the back of the fountain control board part # [AP4071382]. Then remove the back of the unit and investigate there. Is the compressor relay noisey? It is part # []. There is a clear body relay mounted inside frame beside the compressor or the water valve. This was used to "count " the cycles of the water valve actuated to activate the "Change Filter" light. (amongst other use). It is part # []. Is the water valve not closing all the way and chattering? It is part #[AP4071513]. Make sure you do not kink the water line while it is being pushed back in. If the water supply is a copper line, it can be noisey if it is not rolled up like an accordion style and will be noisey if it viberates during compressor run time. Let us know of the serial # so we can get the correct part # needed for the 4-types of compressor relays. Thank You.

Thanks for the info so far.

Gary my model is msd2454gr

Ted Never had the ice maker or fountain hooked up, water too hard here to bother. Also no ice build up what-so-ever. Had that issue a year or so back.
Neither the freezer or fridge door are the source of the noise. The noise is coming from behind or below. I will pull it out asap and try to determine the exact source.
Compressor starts and stops without any abnormal sounds.

When I pull it I will check the defrost relays

The sound is electric rather than a vibration or loose part. It comes on solid with no variance. every little while. Something is turning on and or being turned on. The switches on the door light immediately eliminate (open) it and it immediately turns back on as the switch is released back to the door closed position. Whatever is coming on seems to be directly connected to the light switch. BTW both fridge lights and the freezer light work normally and are unaffected.
Is there any relay or other possible buzzing source in line with the light circuit? One that would be triggered unrelated to the compressor or defrost circuit? Also note that it turns back off in 10-20 seconds regardless of my input

Thanks for all the input
Jet:)
